Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony
Prematriculation and Orientation Week concludes with a Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony at 3:00 pm, Sunday, August 30, 2009 at the Wharton Center on the campus of Michigan State University. Parents, spouses, family members, and friends are invited to attend.
One important component of this very special ceremony is the presentation of a preclinical white coat to each student. Please go to the White Coat Order Form page to complete and submit your order form if you have not already done so. The deadline for submitting the White Coat Order Form is June 5.
Immunizations
All CHM students are required to have their vaccination records on file with the University Physician's Office. For instructions on submitting your vaccination records,go to the Health Care Professions Students website. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the link to the HCP Immunization Form for complete information and instructions for submitting your vaccination records.

Health Insurance
CHM students must carry health insurance coverage. All students are automatically enrolled in the AETNA Student Health Insurance Plan made available through Michigan State University. Details about the plan are available by going to the Student Health Insurance website. Students covered by other health insurance plans or who wish to purchase alternative coverage have the option of waiving the student health insurance. Details about the waiver process, including waiver deadlines, are also available on the Student Health Insurance website and will be reviewed during Prematriculation and Orientation Week.
Students covered by the MSU Student Health Insurance Plan may now enroll online for additional Catastrophic Coverage. Dependents may also be enrolled online. Access online enrollment by going to Aetna Student Health website. Click on Plans and Products Offered to You in the left navigation column, then click on Enroll. The rates posted on this site under BASIC PLAN and CATASTROPHIC COVERAGE are the rates applicable to medical students and their dependents.
Students with pre-existing health conditions and/or whose current health insurance coverage will terminate before August 15, 2009 may wish to carry dual coverage to make sure that their insurance needs are met.
Specific questions about health insurance coverage may be directed to Dr. Judith Brady, Director of Student Wellness and Counseling, at 517-353-9010 or by email.
Housing
The East Lansing and Lansing communities offer a variety of housing options, from subsidized apartment complexes to townhouses and condominiums, most within a few minutes' drive from the MSU campus. Other convenient surrounding communities include Okemos, Haslett, Holt, Williamston, Mason, Waverly, and Grand Ledge. Arrangements for fall housing should be made as soon as possible. Please try to arrange housing so that you may move in by August 20, 2009.
Available housing options include:
On-Campus Residence Hall
Owen Graduate Center, located on campus, provides accommodations for graduate and professional students, post-doctoral fellows and research assistants. Housing fees for Owen Hall include accommodations, local telephone, and a limited amount for meals. Both single room and double room occupancy is available. Occupancy is limited to single students. Additional information on housing options for graduate students can be found on the Housing Services website.On-Campus University Apartments

East Lansing and the surrounding area provide a wide variety of living options from apartments to townhouses to single rooms, many within a few minutes' drive from campus. Most medical students choose to live off campus. If you have a vehicle, the Lansing, Haslett, Okemos, and Williamston communities are within reasonable proximity to MSU. Be sure to indicate that you are a medical student when you contact apartments and housing agents. You can find detailed information about many area apartments in the the Mid Michigan Guide to Apartments or the Lansing Rental Guide.CHM/COM/CVM/LAW Housing and Roommate Match-Up Service
Post a roommate or apartment request or look for a roommate or apartment on the Housing/Roommate Match-Up Service website. This site is provided solely for the use of students enrolled in the College of Human Medicine, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, the College of Veterinarian Medicine, or the College of Law. When posting a request, using your MSU email address for your contact information is preferred. You must indicate within the text of your request that you are a CHM student or your post will be deleted.Housing Purchases
All students should expect to relocate at the end of Year I or Year II to one of the clinical campuses, except in cases of documented hardships. Students are strongly advised, therefore, not to purchase a home or expect to otherwise settle in the local area.
MSU Vehicle Registration and Parking Permits
Beginning July 28, 2009, at 8:00 am, you will be able to register your vehicle and obtain a Lot 100 parking permit online (for the combined Fall and Spring semesters combined only) at the Department of Police (DPS) website. Opting to purchase your permit online will allow you to avoid the long lines at the Parking Office. Permit privileges are not valid until the permit is properly affixed to your windshield, so be sure to allow enough time for the mailing of permits ordered online. All vehicles operated or parked on MSU property by MSU students must be registered with the DPPS Parking Office.
Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and electronic checks are accepted as forms of payment when you register online. If you prefer to pay in cash you may come in to the Parking Office beginning August 17, 2009. Lines will be long so be sure to come prepared by bringing your student ID and your current vehicle registration.
You must register your vehicle based on your residency. The permit to register your vehicle will allow you to park either in Lot 89 (NW corner of Farm Lane and Mount Hope Road) or in the lot determined by your residency. You may also use pay Lots 62W, 79, 100 and RIII (Wharton Center) and pay the hourly rate.
If you want to park in Lot 100* (this is the lot closest to Life Sciences, the Clinical Center, and the Radiology Building/Student Learning Center), you have two options:
Pay to register your vehicle for the entire year and then pay the hourly rate on a daily basis. The cost to register your vehicle will vary depending on where you will be living.
Pay one flat rate per semester for a Lot 100 parking permit (to avoid paying cash on a daily basis). The flat rate is in addition to registering your vehicle (see #1).
If you want to be able to use the gate access rather then go through the booth attendant to exit Lot 100, you will need to go to the ID Office in Room 50 in the Administration Building for a new ID card. Take your old ID card and a state or federal issued pictured ID (such as a driver's license or a passport). Your new ID card will not cost anything if you take your old ID card to exchange for it.
If you do not have an old ID card, the cost for a new ID card is $20 (nonrefundable). You will need to call the MSU Parking Office once you get your new ID card in order to provide them with your ID card number. Operators answer phones Monday - Friday from 7:30am until 4:45pm.
If you have an old gate card that you paid a $20 deposit for, then you may return it to the MSU Parking Office for a refund.
*Please note that permits for Lot 100 are not valid on home football game days, as the lot is reserved for football parking. If you choose to park in Lot 100 on a home football game day, you will be charged the special event parking fee.
Costs for parking permits are as follows:
The cost for the special parking permit for Lot 100 costs $169 per semester.
A commuter parking permit costs $89 for the year.
A resident parking permit (living in residence hall and parking in Lot 89) costs $111 for the year.
A Lot 91, Lot 83, or Lot 75 parking permit costs $179 for the year.
A Lot 65 or Lot 25/51 parking permit costs $268 for the year.
If you have any questions, please call the Parking Office at (517) 355-8440. They are available Monday through Friday between 7:30 am and 4:45 pm.
You can find campus maps that show various parking lots here.
