COLLEGE OF HUMAN MEDICINE
MD MEDICAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM
2004 ACCEPTANCE AGREEMENT
Program Overview
Medical Scholars are encouraged to become broadly educated in the liberal
arts tradition as well as deeply educated in their chosen academic major.
Medical Scholars are invited and encouraged to attend selected presentations
and activities of the College of Human Medicine.
Medical Scholars receive coordinated academic advising through the department
of their academic major, their preprofessional advisor and, when applicable,
through the Honors College.
Medical Scholars may complete the baccalaureate degree as early as three
years or as late as five years after matriculation at Michigan State University.
After completing their bachelors degree, a Medical Scholar may choose
to defer matriculation for one year with the approval of the Committee on
Admissions
Program Requirements
To comply with their conditional admission to the College of Human Medicine,
Medical Scholars will be required to have earned no less than a 3.2 overall
grade point average (4.0 scale) at the time of graduation. Medical Scholars
who do not meet the minimum academic requirement will enter a formal probationary
period, during which the conditional offer of admission is suspended. Medical
Scholars on formal probation who do not meet expectations will be dismissed
from the program.
Students who have a grade point average below 3.0 during any semester
will enter an informal probationary semester and develop a plan for improvement.
Students who do not improve their grade point average may enter formal probation.
All premedical course requirements (as outlined in the CHM
Premedical Handbook and Self-Assessment Guide) must be completed at
the time of matriculation to the College of Human Medicine with a grade
of not less than 3.0 in each required course.
Medical Scholars must consistently demonstrate appropriate ethical, moral,
and professional standards and behavior, as defined by the Michigan State
University Student Rights and Responsibilities document, the College of
Human Medicine Professional Behavior
Expectations document, and the laws of the State of Michigan.
Medical Scholars must fulfill each expectation for program participation
as outlined in Medical Scholars Roles and Responsibilities.
Entering Medical Scholars must possess abilities and skills as outlined
in the Technical Standards
document. Scholars must continue to meet technical standards to be eligible
for matriculation into the College of Human Medicine.
In order to participate in the Medical Scholars Program Senior Year Experience,
and to preserve the College of Human Medicine Medical Scholars conditional
admission agreement, Medical Scholars must submit the American Medical College
Application Service (AMCAS) application and designate themselves only as
a College of Human Medicine applicant. Medical Scholars who do not fulfill
this requirement are disqualified from the Medical Scholars Program.

MEDICAL SCHOLARS ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
At the end of each semester Medical Scholars have their program status evaluated
by the Medical Scholars Program Coordinator and the Assistant Dean for Admissions.
Medical Scholars are kept informed of their program status:
SUCCESSFUL PROGRESS
When a Medical Scholar makes successful progress toward fulfilling
all of the Medical Scholars Program criteria outlined below, s/he may continue
in the Program. Medical Scholars who successfully fulfill the academic and
programmatic requirements of the program at the time of graduation from
Michigan State University are informed by the CHM Committee on Admissions
that their admissions status has been changed from “conditional admission”
to “full admission” to the College of Human Medicine.
Academic Criteria
Fulfill the requirements for a baccalaureate degree (Bachelor
of Science and/or Bachelor of Arts degree) from Michigan State University
within three to five years of admission to the Medical Scholars
Program.
Fulfill the CHM premedical
requirements with a grade of 3.0 or higher in each required
course by the time of matriculation.
Fulfill the Medical Scholars Program Academic
Component requirements at the time of graduation.
Achieve the overall minimum grade point average requirement of
3.2 or higher at the time of graduation.
Program Participation Criteria
Individual Medical Scholars Program Status Meetings
Each Medical Scholar is expected to meet with the Medical Scholars
Program Coordinator during the fall and spring semesters to discuss
progress toward meeting the Program’s academic and programmatic
requirements. Each Medical Scholar is also expected to meet periodically
with the Assistant Dean for Admissions to discuss overall progress
and personal development goals.
Medical Scholars Program Activities
Medical Scholars are required to attend all Medical Scholars
Program activities, including those in the Experiential
and Thematic
Components and the Capstone Reception. No more than two absences
from Medical Scholars Program activities may occur within an academic
year (August to May). In the event of an anticipated absence, Medical
Scholars must inform the Medical Scholars Program Coordinator in
writing (letter or email) prior
to the event, stating the reason for the absence. Documentation
of compelling reasons for an unanticipated absence must be provided.
Late arrival or early departure from scheduled activities may be
counted as an absence.
Program Evaluation
All Medical Scholars are required to participate in ongoing program
evaluations.
Application Procedures for Medical Scholars Prior to CHM
Enrollment
All Medical Scholars complete the American
Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) Application during the
fall semester of their senior year, and arrange with the College of
Human Medicine Office of Admissions to attend the informational and
social portions of the CHM Interview Day. Medical Scholars are not expected
to complete CHM Supplemental Essays or interview on Interview Day. They
are expected to attend the informational sessions on Interview Day.
All accepted Medical Scholars sign the CHM
Technical Standards Document as high school seniors, and again as
college seniors. This signed document asserts that the Medical Scholar
possesses minimum physical and emotional attributes required of competent
physicians.
Student Behavior and Professional Behavior Standards Criteria
Medical Scholars are expected to maintain minimal behavioral standards
as defined in the MSU Student Life document as well as in the Professional
Behavior Expectations document. The College of Human Medicine strives
to admit Medical Scholars who have the potential to become exemplary,
inquiring physicians. The Committee on Admissions carefully evaluates
Medical Scholars Program applicants for their commitment to integrity
and respect for others since the consequences of their behaviors directly
impacts the safety and welfare of patients. Failure to maintain high
professional behavioral standards while a Medical Scholar may result
in program dismissal.
UNSUCCESSFUL PROGRESS
Should a Medical Scholar fail to meet any one of the criteria
outlined above, the Scholar will enter formal probation. During this period
of probation, the conditional offer of admission to the College of Human
Medicine is suspended. The Scholar must then design a remediation plan with
the Coordinator and/or the Assistant Dean for Admissions. Unless directed
otherwise by the Coordinator or the Assistant Dean for Admissions, the Scholar
is expected to continue full participation in the Program. At the completion
of the remediation period, the CHM Committee on Admissions will make the
decision to lift the probation and reinstate the conditional offer of admission,
or dismiss the Scholar from the Program. The Committee on Admissions will
act with the advice of the Coordinator and the Medical Scholars Program
Advisory Committee. A student who is dismissed from the Medical Scholars
Program, yet maintains an interest in pursuing a medical doctor degree,
must follow regular admissions procedures as defined by the American
Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and individual medical schools,
including the completion of the Medical
College Admissions Test (MCAT). Medical Scholars who do not meet Medical
Scholars Program requirements may apply to CHM through the regular admissions
process as defined in the CHM Premedical
Handbook and Self-Assessment Guide.
