CURRENT STUDENTS

Employment with the Office of Admissions

Each year the Office of Admissions employs current CHM students on an hourly basis in positions such as tour guides, student recruiters, and application raters. An invitation to apply for these positions is generally extended the latter part of Spring Semester to any student who served as an Admissions Ambassador during Block I, and who meets the following criteria for eligibility:

  • Is a current Block I or extended student who will be at the East Lansing campus for their Block II experience;

  • Is in good academic standing;

  • Participated in Admissions-related activities during their Block I experience.

Open positions are typically filled in July immediately preceding a student’s Block II experience.

Students who have attended Admissions Ambassador orientation and are interested in employment with the Office of Admissions during their Block II experience should email Jay Bryde to indicate their interest in applying for available positions.

Block I students who have not completed the Admissions Ambassador orientation should email Ariel Brovont for more information about available training dates and times.

The Office of Admissions needs your help!

You may think that once you have been admitted to the College of Human Medicine, further contact with the Office of Admissions is limited — not true! In fact, the Office of Admissions depends upon our current CHM students to serve as Admissions Ambassadors, assisting us in a variety of ways.

The Office of Admissions recruits students during an Organizational Fair held during Prematriculation Week. Students who indicate an interest in volunteering as Admissions Ambassadors are then notified of a required orientation session. After a student has attended an Ambassador orientation session, they may volunteer their services for any of the following opportunities:

Interviews

Social Hour

Tours

Premed Visits and Graduate Fairs

Interviews

The College of Human Medicine holds Interview Days for applicants on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from mid-September to mid-April. Each applicant has two interviews, one of which is with a current CHM student. The Office of Admissions needs volunteer interviewers to assist us in the interview process. You may choose to interview every week, a few times a month, or even monthly. You will be provided with a schedule of interview dates and times; simply indicate your availability for each date.

If you are scheduled to interview, you will receive email notification approximately one week the interview. Just because you sign up to interview on a specific date doesn't mean you will be interviewing that day; various factors contribute to the selection of interviewers for any given week, including specific times the interview needs to take place, and the number of applicants coming that day. Additionally, you will not be asked to interview anyone who attended the same undergraduate institution.

Early each semester the Office of Admissions sends out a letter asking for student interviewers. If you would like to interview for us, please call Ariel Brovont at 353-9622 or email her at ariel.brovont@chm.msu.edu.

Tours

One of the main tasks handled by Jay Bryde, the CHM Admissions Officer, is meeting with and advising prospective applicants. Frequently, these appointments are followed by a tour of CHM, including the Student Learning Center, the ECHT Lab, and the Clinical Skills Teaching Area. If a tour guide is needed, an email containing the details of the tour date and time is sent out to students who have indicated a willingness to assist the Office of Admissions by giving tours. If you would like to serve as a tour guide on an as-needed basis, please call Jay Bryde at (517) 353-9620 or email her at jay.bryde@chm.msu.edu.

Premed Visits and Graduate Fairs

On-Campus

Occasionally, premed clubs and other groups visit the College of Human Medicine to learn more about our school and what we have to offer to potential applicants. A presentation about CHM is followed by a question and answer session with a panel of current CHM students, as well as a tour of CHM.

Another on-campus activity for which CHM student volunteers are needed are Graduate Fairs. Students staff the CHM booth at the Fair, talking with and providing information to interested students.

Off-Campus

Throughout the year, various schools and universities ask CHM to send a representative to speak to premed clubs or other college or high school groups. The Office of Admissions typically sends one staff member and one or more students to conduct these presentations. Many students enjoy visiting their home community or undergraduate school.

There are also a few occasions during the year when CHM sends one or two representatives to Graduate Fairs held throughout the state. Students set up a display unit, distribute informational materials, and talk with interested attendees about the College of Human Medicine.

If you would be willing to serve on a student panel, conduct group tours, or represent CHM at Graduate Fairs, please contact Jay Bryde at (517) 353-9620 or email her at jay.bryde@chm.msu.edu.
