All CHM students receive their clinical education in one of six community campus settings — Flint, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Marquette, or Saginaw. Of the 156 students entering CHM in 2008, 50 will move to Grand Rapids for Block II - fall semester 2009 - and complete their clinical training there. The remaining 106 students will experience Block II on the East Lansing campus, and then move to their assigned community during the summer of 2010 for Block III (years three and four).
The Special Consideration for Community Assignment process has ended. If you were accepted after May 1 and have questions or concerns about community assignment, please contact the Office of Student Affairs and Services at (517) 353-7140.
ALL accepted students will have the opportunity to indicate up to two preferred communities (if any) beginning May 15. The Community Placement Preference form will be available through this web page at 9:00 am, Thursday, May 15. The deadline for submitting the Community Placement Preference form is June 6. Community assignments will be released on June 23. Please submit the Community Placement Preference form even if you are not indicating any preference for community placement.
A full week of Prematriculation and Orientation activities begins on Saturday, August 16 and continues through Sunday, August 24. All entering students are required to attend the entire week of activities. We encourage you to relocate to East Lansing by August 11. Go to the Office of Student Affairs and Services web page for more information about Prematriculation and Orientation Week, BLS for Healthcare Providers training, Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony, immunizations, housing, vehicle registration and parking permits, financial aid, and other important issues.
If you are contemplating deferral of your matriculation to 2009, please email our office as soon as possible.
To ensure that information reaches you in a timely manner, please email us with any changes in your mailing address, telephone number, and/or email address.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email the Office of Admissions or call (517) 353-9620.

"Match Day" & Class of 2008 Residency Placements
Withdrawal of Acceptance/Deposit Refund
Within two weeks of the date of your letter of acceptance, confirm your place in CHM’s entering class by sending your written acceptance of admission to us by email, and paying an advanced enrollment deposit of $100 online at our secure website.
The Committee on Admissions wants to ensure that all incoming
students are ready to focus on their medical training. We recognize that —
for a variety of reasons — some accepted applicants will wish to defer
their entry into medical school. Personal concerns, completion of a graduate
degree, research project, service or mission commitment, or establishing Michigan
residency are just a few examples of requests to defer which have been granted.
If you wish to defer your entry into the College of Human Medicine, please
submit your request by email to
the Office of Admissions as quickly as possible after receiving your notification
of acceptance to CHM.
CHM is pleased to invite accepted applicants to apply to the CHM MD/PhD Program. Visit the MD/PhD web page for complete program and application information.
There's still time to apply to the Rural Physician Program (RPP) or the Leadership in Medicine for the Underserved/Vulnerable (LMUV) Program. If you haven't already applied to either of these programs and would like to do so now, please email the Office of Admissions.

Your MSU Personal ID Number (PID) and Personal Access Number (PAN) allow you to activate your MSU NetID and MSU email account. Visit the Activating Your MSU NetID website for detailed information on activating your account. Once your deposit has been processed, an MSU Personal ID Number (PID) and Personal Access Number (PAN) will be assigned by the University. It may take up to six weeks once you have paid your advanced enrollment deposit before you receive your PID and PAN Numbers. Once your PID and PAN numbers have been assigned, you will be able to obtain them through a link on your CHM AIS Status Page. Once you have paid your acceptance deposit, check your status page regularly for this option.It is very important that you protect your PAN and not share it with others, much as you would not share the PIN of your ATM card. It is recommended that you memorize your PAN, or keep a record of it in a safe place, as you will need to refer to it in the future.
Your Personal Identification and Personal Access Numbers (PID and PAN) are
required to activate your MSU NetID and MSU email account. Your MSU NetID
gives you access to online resources and electronic mail at Michigan State
University. Visit the Activating
Your MSU NetID website for detailed information on how to activate your
NetID. IN addition, please let our office know when you begin using your MSU
email address so that we may update our database.

Students who anticipate a need or potential need for accommodation in the educational setting or for examinations should indicate their need at this time. This will permit CHM to both plan for the accommodation, and ensure that any additional documentation necessary to support the request will be available for review by the Accommodations Committee prior to the beginning of the Fall Semester.
To request accommodation, contact Wrenetta Green, MS, Director of Academic Support Services, at greenwr@msu.edu or (517) 884-1849 at this time. Please include a description of the type(s) of accommodation you have received in the past. Also provide both the type of accommodation needed and the dates of the documentation that support this need. For example: Testing in separate room and 50% more time to complete examinations. This accommodation began 2005 and was supported by neuropsychological testing done in 2004. Later, you will be asked to provide written documentation supporting past accommodation. You may be required to submit additional documentation as well.
Students who have not had accommodation previously but suspect that accommodation might be warranted should also contact Mrs. Green for suggestions on the procedures for exploring the possibility of accommodations.
Financial
aid is handled through the MSU Office
of Financial Aid (OFA). Once the OFA receives your FAFSA, you can talk
with staff about a prospective financial aid offer. The OFA anticipates making
the first awards in late March. You will receive your first award notification
in paper form with instructions for accessing your financial aid status and
updates online. You will need your PID and PAN numbers to access your information.
Once your PID and PAN numbers have been assigned, you will be able to obtain
them through a link on your CHM AIS Status Page. Once you have paid your acceptance
deposit, check your status page regularly for this option.
The OFA typically begins sending financial aid award notifications in early
April to accepted applicants who have been issued PID and PAN numbers by the
MSU Admissions Office. Student financial aid award information is also posted
to the StuInfo web system.
For financial aid information, please visit the Medical Student Financial Aid website and/or contact Judi Marks, Diane Batten, or Teresa Parker at the Medical Student Financial Aid Office by email or at 517/353-5940.

As
you may already be aware, "Match Day" is the culmination of a process
that begins in the fall of a medical student's senior year. Students use the Electronic
Residency Application Service (ERAS) to apply for specialized graduate
training in residency programs in the US. Students are then invited to interview
at the discretion of each program. The National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) provides an impartial venue
for matching applicants' preferences for residency positions with program
directors' preferences for applicants. Using the NRMP, students electronically
rank the programs in their order of preference and residency program directors
across the country do the same. At noon on March 17 each year, students all
over the country receive their residency assignments. Click HERE to see
where Class of 2008 graduates will be going for their residencies. You can
also read a great article about one CHM student's journey to his residency match.
CHM believes that learning about and experiencing research is an important component of medical education. The extensive research being conducted within CHM provides students with opportunities for participating in research across a wide array of disciplines and settings. Faculty investigators in both the clinical and basic science departments serve as valuable mentors. Moreover, CHM is uniquely positioned to offer research experiences unlike most other medical schools, in two important ways.
First, MSU is the only university in the US to be home to three medical schools: CHM, the College of Osteopathic Medicine and the College of Veterinary Medicine. The collaborations that exist between these Colleges, as well as with the Colleges of Nursing, Engineering, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Agriculture and Natural Resources, produce ground-breaking, multidisciplinary research that responds to our society's real-life needs. Teams that bring together bioengineering, medicine, and zoology are just one example of the research projects underway at MSU.
Second, CHM’s community-based system provides access to a large base of clinicians, mentors, and patients who participate in research designed to translate findings from bench to bedside.CHM has multiple units engaged in research:
The Institute for Health Care Studies (IHCS), whose mission is to improve the health care available to Michigan residents through research, policy analysis, education and outreach, and support of quality improvement activities;
The Center of Excellence (COE) in Minority Medical Education - Cultural Diversity Research Program (CDRP), funded by the Department of Health and Social Services, and whose goal is to engage underrepresented minority (URM) students in minority health research and to create a critical mass of students who have an interest in research and who will consider a career in academic medicine;
The Office of Medical Education Research and Development (OMERAD), with a history of over three decades as a national leader in innovative curriculum development and evaluation, medical education research including the use of new technology, and the preparation of junior clinical faculty for academic careers, and
The Great Lakes Research in Practice Network (GRIN) which offers access to a statewide network of primary care clinicians experienced in participation in practice-based research.
The CHM Office of Research sponsors multiple student research support services including:
the CHM-Research Listserv, an interactive communication tool for students, residents and faculty across all campuses;
a Student Research Interest Group (SRIG) which meets every 4-6 weeks and offers students peer networking and review of research proposals, seminars on conducting research, faculty research presentations, and an open communications forum;
a ROPES (Research Opportunities and Education for Students) program, currently in development with several components already implemented. It is a comprehensive, formal program of student research support services that will benefit students across all the campuses and facilitate student involvement in research, research products, funding, and collaborations;
Research Days at five of the six campuses with research awards for best faculty, student, and resident oral and poster presentations;
Ruth McIlnay Summer Scholarship Awards to support four students conducting research related to oncology;
4th year research elective options, and
Research Advisory Assistance for help with developing research ideas and projects, connecting to faculty mentors, and gaining research experiences.
